Stuttgart - The Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo - the third model series from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG - will be presented to the public for the first time at the Paris Motor Show, which is due to open on September 28, 2002. Both vehicles combine excellent on-road dynamics with outstanding off-road driving qualities. Porsche has managed to achieve this unique combination in the Sport Utility Vehicle segment thanks to the "Porsche Traction Management" (PTM) permanent four-wheel drive system which is standard on both models.

In basic mode, PTM feeds 62 per cent of the engine power to the rear wheels and 38 per cent to the front wheels. A multiple-plate clutch is able to vary the distribution of power according to specific driving conditions. PTM, which has a speed reducer for off-road driving, doesn't only respond to lack of traction, however. Sensors also measure, the speed of the vehicle, its lateral acceleration, the steering angle and operation of the accelerator pedal, for example, which means that PTM always calculates the optimum locking action and therefore spreads out drive forces as required to the front and the rear axles.

The Cayenne S, which costs 60,204 euro incl. VAT in Germany (basic EU price: 51,900 euro), features a 250 kW (340 bhp) V8 engine. Thanks to the new six-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission, which is available as an option, it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. The top speed is 242 km/h. The 4.5 litre engine generates a high level of torque even at low engine speeds. The maximum torque of 420 Nm is reached at between 2,500 rpm and 5,500 rpm. In the United States, the Tiptronic S is included with the standard equipment along with other features such as a multi-functional steering wheel. The basic US price is 55,900 US dollars.

Outstanding Interior Concept

However, it's not just in the engine and the chassis and the resulting superb dynamics that the Cayenne S is setting new trends. Porsche has gone to great lengths to ensure that the interior also reflects the unmistakeable quality of Porsche design. The ignition lock is, as always, positioned to the left of the three-spoke steering wheel, and two large round instrument dials with a central multi-functional display dominate the instrument panel. The standard equipment includes an alarm system, on-board computer, electric windows, electrically adjustable front seats and an expansive leather interior. Automatic air-conditioning and a CD radio with twin tuner and ten speakers are also included as standard.

The luggage space - fitted with a luggage net and boot cover - has a capacity of 540 litres. The backrests of the rear seat can be split 40/60 or folded down completely in no time at all, allowing the load capacity to be increased to the maximum 1770 litres. There's no need to open the boot lid when loading smaller objects. The rear window opens upwards, providing a second option for accessing the luggage space.

Cayenne Turbo Brings You to a New Dimension

The Cayenne Turbo, which is far more sophisticated in both technical terms and in terms of motoring comfort, costs 99,876 euro incl. VAT in Germany (basic EU price: 86,100 euro). Under the bonnet, eight cylinders work with two exhaust gas turbochargers complete with intercoolers to provide 331 kW (450 bhp) of power. The Turbo sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 266 km/h. Dynamic drive force distribution and excellent throttle response can be experienced at all engine speeds. The enormous maximum torque of 620 Nm at engine speeds of between 2,250 rpm and 4,750 rpm speaks for itself.

The standard equipment for the Cayenne Turbo includes, in addition to the new six-speed Tiptronic transmission, pneumatic suspension with a self-levelling feature and height adjustment. The pneumatic suspension not only guarantees extra ground clearance on rough terrain and, thanks to self-levelling, a consistent vehicle position regardless of the load it is carrying, but also ensures maximum driving pleasure and enhanced active safety by automatically lowering the vehicle relative to increasing road speed. Incorporating six different ride height levels, the pneumatic suspension adjusts over a range of 116 mm. Also included as standard is the "Porsche Active Suspension Management" (PASM), a brand-new variable damping system which is offered in combination with the pneumatic suspension. This electronically variable damping system continually adjusts damper forces relative to surface conditions and driving style.

Leather and Aluminium Interior

Leaving aside the technical highlights such as the pneumatic suspension and Bi-Xenon headlights with cornering light as well as metallic paint, the interior of the Cayenne Turbo is far superior to that of the Cayenne S. The Turbo comes with the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, with navigation module, on-board computer, antenna diversity and the customised BOSE surround sound system with 14 speakers and a total output of 350 W as standard. The leather interior is more expansive than in the Cayenne S and aluminium is used for details such as the door and control panel trim. The exclusive standard equipment also includes an electrically adjustable and heated steering wheel, electrically adjustable front seat with memory function and heated seats, a heated rear seat as well as ParkAssist for precision parking. In the United States, the Cayenne Turbo comes with an outstanding range of standard equipment and a basic price of 88,900 US dollars.

Cayenne Production in Leipzig

Both the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo will be produced at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, although the engines will be built in Zuffenhausen. Porsche has invested around 128 million euro in the new plant, which will be officially opened on August 20, 2002. The Leipzig facility includes a new Customer Centre, where Porsche customers from all over the world can come to pick up their new Cayenne directly from the factory. You can try out the running-in and test track right next to the Customer Centre or the neighbouring off-road track with an instructor to familiarise yourself with the handling and technical features of the Cayenne.
