Volkswagen presents a new fuel and transmission strategy

  • SunFuel – Designer Petrol for the Future
  • The Path to the FuelCell

Wolfsburg, Germany - On April 25/26, 2001 Volkswagen presented its new fuel and transmission strategy at the Vienna motor symposium.

"The engine of the future will have to be significantly better adapted to its fuel than until now. Huge fuel savings will be then possible" said Dr. Wolfgang Steiger, head of Volkswagen Engine Research, in Vienna." We need a determined strategy of transition until the launch of fuel cell power trains operating on hydrogen, which represent a promising alternative propulsion system for the future. In the industrial sector there are further technological and cost barriers in the fuel cell propulsion system segment" he added.

Volkswagen sees development in the near future as a systematic optimisation of conventional engines and a special designer fuel, which Volkswagen calls SunFuel. SunFuel will be made either from natural gas or regenerative biogas. Its pollution level is low and it is almost odourless. Moreover, SunFuel could be used in the first generation of fuel cell cars. The fact that no parallel petrol station infrastructure has to be built is a great advantage, which makes global supply of this new fuel easier and faster .

In accordance with the whole energy chain, petrol and diesel engines with direct fuel injection already represent the most fuel-efficient power units. There are however certain limits regarding exhaust emissions. The properties of the fuel play a major role. Synthetic, odourless fuels made without sulphur permit emissions to be reduced and also make the accompanying treatment of the exhaust gas easier.
