DaimlerChrysler Launches Employee e-Business Offensive with DC eLife
Stuttgart – In a first for an automotive company in Germany, DaimlerChrysler is combining all employee-related e-business activities under the umbrella of DC eLife. In the framework of this business-to-employee (B2E) offensive, all employees will have the opportunity to extend and improve their IT skills. "With DC eLife, our employees get the opportunity to use e-business extensively for themselves and for the company," said DaimlerChrysler Board member for Human Resources Günther Fleig today in Stuttgart. "Furthermore, quicker access to information helps boost the efficiency of knowledge management. By means of DC eLife, we are not only guaranteeing the attractiveness of our company but also the professional opportunities of our employees." Central access to DC eLife is granted by a new intranet platform, the Employee Portal. There, employees are presented with a wide range of information that they can access at any time. A considerable amount of time and therefore money is saved this way in day-to-day work. At the same time, employees become better and better acquainted with the diverse functions of the Internet and intranet and are therefore prepared for ongoing and future changes in their professional and private lives. In order for employees to be able to profit from DC eLife as broadly as possible, the company is offering them an interactive educational program specially developed for this purpose. Those who have successfully completed this training receive the DCePass. The information learned for DCePass can be applied immediately both at work and at home. With the help of the new, Web-based technologies, employees are actively involved in human resources work, and gain more individual responsibility. This includes, for example, the maintenance of their own personal data, the creation of certificates or the management of working hours. For the employees in the Human Resources department, the reduction in the administrative part of their work means that they can devote themselves more to human resources counseling and career management. The employee portal—a virtual gateway to DaimlerChrysler In addition to information relevant to the company, the Employee Portal combines a large number of services (travel service, blackboard, computer support) and applications (Who’s Who, employee suggestions) as well as select Internet content. Employees can design their portal pages to match their individual needs, thereby making their work routines more efficient. ePeople—efficiently expanding services and promoting individual responsibility The new uniform human resources management system ePeople is an application of the Employee Portal. In the future, a large share of the human resources work will thus be carried out via the computer network. Many things will be done by the employees themselves, such as the maintenance of personal data or the advertising of open positions by managers. The human resources departments of the individual company locations will access a shared, central database that guarantees that the locations are connected with one another. DCePass—e-business qualification at DaimlerChrysler DCePass is an interactive educational program that can provide help on all subjects having to do with computers, e-business and Internet technology. Initially, users will be able to work with it on CD-ROM. Later, the educational program will be accessible via the Employee Portal. DCePass is designed especially for employees who have so far not had the opportunity to work with this medium and is intended to enable employees to participate in future, network-based forms of interaction. Under the umbrella of DC eLife, numerous additional initiatives will be launched in the near future. DC eLife is a part of the DCX NET Initiative, which was formed in November 2000 and in which the business-to-employee operations and all other e-business activities of DaimlerChrysler, including "workforce connect," are combined.
