Within the framework of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Renault establishes a commercial presence in Peru Renault is returning to the Peruvian market through Maquinarias S.A., Nissan's partner in Peru. The agreement signed between the two companies provides for the Renault brand to establish a significant commercial presence in the country. Renault is aiming for a 5% market share in the medium term, with an intermediate target of 3% as of 2001, thanks to the introduction of a full range of products. The new Renault facilities, set up by the Nissan importer, were inaugurated on January 8 in the presence of Luc-Alexandre Ménard, Senior Vice President, in charge of Renault's Mercosur operations. The marketing of Renault vehicles by Nissan in Peru marks a new step forward by the Alliance in South America. Earlier moves included the distribution of Nissan vehicles in Brazil by Renault, since October 1, 2000, and in Uruguay by the Renault importer, since December 1, 2000. According to the terms of the agreement, Maquinarias S.A. will import built-up Renault vehicles from the Mercosur and Europe and will distribute them through its current network of dealerships. In an initial phase, distribution will be limited to Lima with three show rooms, one of which will be for Renault only. Starting in 2002, Renault vehicles will be distributed throughout the territory via a network of 12 sales outlets. Renault will market Clio, the Mégane hatchback and coupé, Scénic, Kangoo and Kangoo Express. Peru is the sixth largest market in South America, with 16,800 vehicles sold in 2000. It offers growth potential for new imported vehicles, with the forthcoming application of stricter regulations covering used car imports. Maquinarias was created in 1957, the year in which it signed a cooperation agreement with Nissan to market the brand's products. Today, Nissan has a 10% stake in the capital of its local representative. Nissan ranks second in the market with 2,700 vehicles sold in 2000, giving it a market share of 16.1%.
