Ford : Agreement aims to secure future for Ford’s Dagenham plant

Dagenham, Essex, UK, April 21, 1999 - Ford announced that it had signed a new agreement with employee representatives at the Dagenham Body & Assembly Plant which contains some important new initiatives to help secure a competitive future for the site.

The agreement includes an increase in the total installed capacity at Dagenham to 300,000 units per year (up from the current 272,000), plus confirmation that Dagenham will be the sole Western European source for a second model line, with a capacity of 150,000 units per year. Both changes are subject to the achievement of agreed performance milestones.

Linked to this potential increased investment is a commitment from the employee representatives to adopt more flexible and lean operating practices in the plant (included in a new "Modern Operating Agreement"), and to implement the actions necessary to continue the quality, cost and productivity improvements required to make Dagenham competitive with the highest European standards.

The new agreement also reinforces an earlier commitment from November 1997 in which Dagenham was confirmed as a long-term strategic source for the Ford Fiesta, and the lead plant for the next generation Fiesta. The capacity increase and addition of a second model line are scheduled to take place early in the next decade.
