The New Beetle RSi design study
At the Automobile Salon in Geneva, Volkswagen was showing the most impressive sports-car design study based on the New Beetle which was recently exhibited elsewhere for the first time: the New Beetle RSi.

Elegant and powerful in appearance and with a silver-grey paint finish, this design study attracts immediate attention as a result of its 140-millimetre wider track, with flared front and rear fenders linked by broad side skirts, and because of the sheer drama of the front- and rear-end styling.

Two additional driving lights are recessed into the massive front air dam, which has large cooling air inlets. The rear end is dominated by a large spoiler and a voluminous rear apron panel from which the two massive exhaust tailpipes protrude. Additional painted trims at the windscreen and rear window create the effect of a lengthened roof line. These drastic styling measures give the New Beetle RSi the authentic flair of a high-class roadgoing sports car. Power from its V6 engine is transmitted to both axles via a six-speed manual-shift gearbox and Volkswagen's advanced 4MOTION four-wheel drive system incorporating a Haldex clutch. Road grip is assured by wide 255/45 R 18 tyres on 9 x 18-inch alloy wheels.

The elegant, sporting interior is dominated by bucket seats upholstered in black and red leather. High-grade materials such as aluminum and carbon fiber are used for numerous details. Restyled instruments and additional displays in the headline supply the driver with all the necessary information. The central instrument is a revolution counter, which also contains a digital road-speed display. No decision on producing such an emphatically sporting "Super New Beetle" has yet been taken.

The award was presented at the CeBIT exhibition in Hanover during a celebration event involving around 300 guests from the worlds of industry, politics and design. Peter Schreyer, Head of Design at AUDI AG, commented: "We're delighted by this award. It confirms yet again Audi's high standard of design. For us, the Audi TT Coupé is the realization of a vision. We've developed it without compromise, with passionate commitment and a love of detail, all the way from the design study to the production model and we've created a modern sports car that will arouse fascination and pure emotion."

The Audi TT Coupe was launched in autumn last year. By February, almost 14,000 cars had been delivered. The iF award for design excellence was conferred last year on the Audi A3 and Audi A6. In 1998, the Audi A3 also received the German Product Design Prize. The iF Industry Forum Hanover, which was set up in 1953 under the name "Good Industrial Design" ["Die gute Industrieform"], is regarded throughout the world as one of the leading bodies in the field of industrial design. Each year, with its Product Design Awards, the iF bestows its Seal of Approval on products of outstandingly functional and innovative design.
