Record June in Europe for Chrysler and Jeep® Brands Highlight DaimlerChrysler Sales Outside North America

Auburn Hills, Mich., July 2, 1999 - Buoyed by the successful international launch of the Jeep® Grand Cherokee and the Chrysler 300M, DaimlerChrysler Corporation's American brands had their best June ever in Europe, where sales were 10,846, a 16 percent jump for those brands from June 1998. The Chrysler and Jeep brands realized a triple-digit increase in Greece and double-digit upswings in France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, Finland and Austria. Grand Cherokee had its second-best sales month in history outside North America.

Sales outside North America as a whole for the Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands were down 4 percent for the month of June, with 16,859 vehicles sold, compared to 17,589 sold in the year earlier period. For the first six months of the year, sales were 91,958, a 12 percent dip from the first half of 1998. "The Chrysler 300M and the Jeep Grand Cherokee have both had incredibly successful launches outside North America," said Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President, International and Latin America and General Manager Chrysler Truck Operations. "June sales are an indication of the kind of worldwide acceptance those vehicles are getting."

Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands turned in a strong sales performance in Puerto Rico, where 709 vehicles were delivered to customers, a 42 percent jump, and Brazil, with sales of 965, a 17 percent increase over the year-earlier period. Sales in each of those countries were up 30 percent for the first six months of the year, Puerto Rico with 3,820 units; Brazil, 6,340. June highlights by country also include Japan, with sales of 666, a 5 percent increase and Australia, with sales of 669, a 13 percent increase for the month.

Regionally, June sales were 2,915 in Latin America, a 36 percent decline from June 1998. Asia-Pacific sales were 2,344, an 8 percent dip. Middle East/Africa sales were 754, down 34 percent from last year.

Torrance, CA,   July 1, 1999 - Following the best sales month in ist history, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., reported today best-ever June sales of 122,747 vehicles, an increase of 4.9 percent over last June. Toyota also announced best-ever second-quarter sales of 367,437, and calendar-year-to-date sales of 707,747, an increase of 11.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Toyota Tundra 2000

In addition, both TMS divisions increased sales over the same period last year. The Toyota Division reported best-ever June sales of 107,706, with CYTD numbers reaching 617,918, an increase of 9.0 percent. The Lexus Division also reported increased sales through the second-quarter of 89,829, up 31.4 percent, with best-ever June sales of 15,041, up 16.9 percent.

Toyota's all-new full-size pickup truck, the Tundra, had the best sales debut ever of any Toyota or Lexus product. It sold 8,011 units in its first full month of sales, 3,339 more than Tercel in October of 1979, the previous record holder.

Tundra's success added to a best-ever June of light truck sales, which were up 33.7 percent, to 46,170. Also contributing to the increase in light truck segment numbers were best-ever June sales of 4Runner, up 23.8 percent to 10,549; Sienna up 24.4 percent to 8,104; RAV4 up 3.2 percent to 5,278; and Land Cruiser up 8.7 percent to 1,585. Toyota compact pickups posted sales of 12,630, a jump of 2.7 percent over June 1998.

Lexus sales remain hot with increased sales of its RX 300 and LX 470 sport utility vehicles. The RX 300 continues to sell strong with June sales of 5,838, up 46.9 percent, while the LX 470 full-size luxury SUV is up 24.0 percent to 1,205. The ES 300 led Lexus sedan sales with 3,925 units sold, up 4.0 percent compared to last June. The GS 300 also sold well with an increase of 28.0 percent over June 1998, to 1,957. Sales of North American-built vehicles were up 10.0 percent compared to the same period last year, to 81,276 units, which represented 66.2 percent of total June sales.

DETROIT, July 2, 1999 - Customers across the United States bought or leased 497,047 General Motors vehicles in June for the corporation's best sales month since May 1989.

In addition, truck sales for the month, at 238,420 units, were the second best in corporate history, down just 0.4 percent from June 1998, the best truck month ever for GM. Car sales totaled 258,627 units, up 2 percent. Total vehicle sales were up 0.8 percent.

At the half-way point in the calendar year, vehicle sales are 1.2 percent ahead of the year-ago pace, at 2,557,954 units. Car sales are up 2.7 percent; truck sales are down 0.3 percent.

"While June was the best month we've had in over 10 years and we're up year to date, it's clear we can still improve in areas where we are strong, such as mid-size cars and full-size trucks, and we want to bring more strength to areas such as small and luxury cars," said Roy S. Roberts, vice president of GM North American Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.
