GM
Service Parts Operations Announces New Parts Distribution Center In Martinsburg, W. VA.
. |
| Martinsburg, W. Va., Dec. 2, 1999 - General Motors Service
Parts Operations has selected the Cumberland-Baltimore-Ohio (Cumbo) Yard Industrial Park -
property adjacent to its current facility in Martinsburg, W. Va. - as the location of a
new Parts Distribution Center, according to Ronald T. West, general director of
warehousing and distribution for SPO. This new 352,000 square foot PDC will handle
automotive replacement part shipments to more than 500 GM dealerships in Delaware;
Maryland; New Jersey; Pennsylvania; Virginia; Washington, D.C.; and West Virginia.
Depending on weather conditions and infrastructure requirements, plans call for the
construction of the new PDC to be completed and shipments to begin by mid-2001.
West says that several factors influenced the decision to locate the new facility near
the existing PDC. "The hard work and dedication of our valued work force in
Martinsburg was a key part of the decision to remain in Martinsburg. The cooperative work
between the leadership of UAW Local 1590 and Martinsburg management was also an important
contributing factor. Local and state incentives were also instrumental in providing a
favorable business case. In addition, we have maintained an excellent relationship with
the state of West Virginia and the local community since we first opened our facility
there in 1968. SPO is proud to represent the corporation in West Virginia with the only GM
facility in the state, and we look forward to continuing our strong association with the
community.
SPO has opened several new PDCs in 1999. The Charlotte, N.C., PDC handles the parts
needs of GM dealers located in North and South Carolina, as well as portions of Alabama,
Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. It began shipping in late August. The Jackson,
Miss., PDC serves GM dealers in Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as portions of Alabama,
Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, and Tennessee. It began shipments in July. The Los Angeles
ACDelco PDC handles the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Western
United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. It began operations in mid-June.
Two additional ACDelco PDCs are in process. The Memphis, Tenn., ACDelco PDC will handle
the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Central and Southeastern
United States and began its first shipments in November. The Columbus, Ohio, ACDelco PDC
will handle the parts needs of ACDelco distributors and retailers in the Eastern and
Northeastern United States and is on track to begin shipping in the first quarter of 2000.
A new PDC in Cincinnati, Ohio, was recently announced with construction planned for
completion in early 2001.

| TORRANCE, Calif., Dec. 1 - Total American Honda
sales set a new November record of 78,143, up 2.2 percent from November '98 and topping

987,721, up 6.7 percent from last year's record pace. |

| All-time record Odyssey minivan sales of 9,519,
up 197.6 percent, paced the march to the November record. The company also set new
November records for total truck, CR-V and Acura TL sales. Despite the records, however,
there was concern about the impact rising interest rates are having on the automotive
market. "Even though we set a new November record, the pace of the market
definitely slowed during the month," said Dick Colliver, American Honda executive
vice president. "Rising interest rates are beginning to have an impact on big-ticket
items such as housing and vehicle sales. It's making for a very competitive
marketplace."
Acura Division sales of 8,924 were up 4.2 percent for the month and are up 6.3 percent
for the year to 107,972. Honda Division posted its 32nd consecutive month of increased
sales and was up 1.9 percent to 69,219 for the month. Year-to-date Honda Division sales
reached 879,749, up 6.8 percent from last year. |
